Townshend Room

Townshend Room

The Townshend Room is named after the Museum's principal benefactor, the Reverend Chauncy Hare Townshend. In this magical room you can see a sparkling array of ceramics and objet's d'art from around the world. This room was once the Museum's lecture hall and was converted into a gallery to display Townshend's substantial bequest.

Canopic Jar

The Museum's small but significant Egyptian collection gives an insight into both an ancient culture and that of the adventurous Victorian tourist. A mummified hand mounted in a gilt frame is one of the stars of the Museum's collections, attracting gasps of horror from young and old alike! The display also includes mummified animals, shabtis, Canopic jars and amulets. Unusually, the Museum has an Egyptian handling collection, for information on using this resource please click here

Delft Plate

The Townshend bequest of 1868 contained a wonderful collection of ceramics such as Napoleon's Sèvres breakfast service, said to have been captured at the Battle of Waterloo. Townshend's bequest to the Museum led other local collectors to donate items from their own collections. The Museum also boasts a striking display of blue and white Delftware.
